Goodbye, Lolita

Image
December 26, 2019. Sue Lyon dies at 73. We all remember her as Lolita. She's one of those actresses who became the role and the role became her.
According to her good friend, Phil Syracopoulous, Ms. Lyon's health had been in decline for some time.
"Lyon’s followup to Lolita was a co-starring role opposite Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr in the John Huston-directed 1964 feature The Night Of the Iguana . She went on to appear in two dozen movies and TV shows, Tony Rome and 7 Women . Her last screen credit was the 1980 horror movie Alligator ." Evil Knievel notably." "Before Stanley Kubrick’s covergirl in heart-shaped glasses made eyes at movie-goers and readers alike, Vladimir Nabokov had his own intentions for the cover of Lolita: “I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls.” I remember Sue Lyon.

Just in case, here's the link to the YOUTUBE 'Jackson' songlist. If you like Lucinda Williams, Sly and the Family Stone, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone and Florence and the Machine, Frank Ocean and Creedence Clearwater, you'll definitely like the playlist and be coming back for seconds. Uncut Gems: everybody's talking about Adam Sandler, but I love MISS JULIA FOX!

Image
Uncut Gems is one busy damn show! It's full of cuts, edits, actors, moments, tension, twists, turns and knee jerks. It will wear you out. Spoiler alert...it opens with a colonoscopy and I called it the minute I saw the first extreme polyp close-up. I re-committed to my formal vow to never ever gamble again while I sat there watching this movie whose theme, at least to me, was gambling is Satan's playground. I had a life lesson at the Galveston, Texas amusement park where I lost a year's allowance at one of those old come-ons right as you entered the gates. My pledge was reinforced around 1974 by my weird compulsive gambler boyfriend back in Beaumont. So, Uncut Gems brought up a whole whale-size steamer trunk full of memories. So, everybody was really really good in the movie. Of course, Adam Sandler who wore himself and myself out. How can anybody keep up that pace for a whole dang movie? Damn. Eric Bogosian , always tip top, brought up wafts of his performance in my fa

Bombshell: More stars than you can shake a stick at!

Image
I saw Bombshell yesterday and loved every Loverboy Lovin' Ever Minute of it!! The writing was great. SO good, it had me taking notes. "Hoodies are creepy," says Beth "Dirty John" Ailes. I won't spoil it for you. Go take your OWN notes. First, the casting was incredible. I always think of John Sayles longtime partner, Maggie Renzi on stars in movies. She said it was disconcerting to the story when you kept having to go, "Oh, that's so and so from this or that show." Bombshell tackled that problem by casting great so and so's from all the shows with right-on perfection. It was like a big huge obscene wedding cake that Roger Ailes tries to gobble down all at once. You just can't stop once you get going. Titillating to all the senses. And, yeah, that WAS Malcolm McDowell playing Rupert Murdoch with his twerky-ass Clockwork self! I can't wait to get to the best part of the whole thing, my new favorite movie-star-actress-phenomeno
