Old skool Austin and tiny man cars on Mother's day at the Stallion

Image
One tired old Sunday, Toby and my sister, Martha and I had been out to eat. Martha and I had a large coupon book of discount coupons to local Austin restaurants in which you bought one meal and got another free or at a discount. I remember Toby, Martha and I taking full advantage of these coupons for a good long time. We used up the Stallion ones first. I think there were two. One particularly memorable occasion was on a Mother's day. We ate our chicken frieds and drank our beers while the table next to us had a long and very noisy fight. The four family members were all fat. The dad and mom just sat there eating and the boy was pretty quiet as well. The daughter was screaming throughout the meal how mistreated she was and how much she hated her family. She really hated the dad, but included the mother who was just trying to eat her meal. I recall mostly how the mother was so quiet, a classic case of this pathetic woman whose life just didn't pan out the way she

Okay, ya'll! I been talking about it and talking about it...like Funkytown! And, now it's a reality. Cowbells and Ding Dongs is launched. Spotify and all the platforms. Platforms you never even heard of. The first production of Cowbells and Ding Dongs podcast is my novel, Jackson. The first two episodes are the Prologue: Ghosts in the Boneyard and Chapter One - Grace. Each episode is accompanied by a song that inspired that chapter. The prologue features early Miss Joan Baez and her version of In the Pines. Grace, Chapter One, is enhanced by Lucinda Williams Jackson. We all've had our takes on it, so thank you, gals! I hope you enjoy the podcast and future episodes. I have reached out to the Austin music community to contribute their versions of songs which inspired chapters and moments in this book. No pressure, but you know who you are, fuckers! And, I will come a knocking! KINDLE here PRINT VERSION here  GOODREADS PAGE

Come back and save us, Steve McQueen

Image
Last night, I had a really great dream. It was still bad out there and Trump was still our evil president trying to kill us all. But, Steve McQueen was still alive. I had written a short story about a cowboy from Wyoming, a modern day cowboy, who runs for president. And wins! He turns out to be the kind of American this country needed. He saw the bad side of racism and oil creeps hurting the Native American nations. He'd seen it all, like cowboys do in real good cowboy movies. They're always on the outside looking in at the bad things civilization does. Anyway, Steve loved this story. I was in San Francisco in the dream and Steve told me to run and get him his favorite treats, those striped peanut butter bars and those Jolly Rancher Watermelon candies. I went over to Market Street and Castro nearby where we were meeting and couldn't find those striped bars anywhere. I wound up at this Asian market and had to get him this weird jello stuff that was watermelon flavored an

What if? A magical mystery theatre like once upon a time...

Last night, I had the most incredible dream. First off, I live out by the Colorado River with a bunch of animals and love where I live. But, in the dream, my husband and I moved into Austin. It was a busy section, maybe over by Barton Creek amid all the high rises and such. We rented an apartment with yellow wood floors and lots of light. But, the incredible part was the movie theater downstairs. I'd purchased a ticket to see a movie there on the life of Lina Wertmüller . The movie started at five minutes to five and for some reason, I missed it. I got there an hour late and began to cry and beg the theater manager, a man wearing a suit with a vest, a movie suit like movie managers used to wear back in the day. He tut-tutted me and said the evening feature was sold out and most likely the people would be bringing children who'd take up any extra seats. I asked, "What do children know about Lina  Wertmüller? The lady who owned the theater turned out to be a frien
