Stateless on Netflix - FYIFAFT pandemic pick of the day

During this Covid crisis, us here at Fuck You I'm From Austin Film Talk are a little sick of all the unwanted advice. We're stuck at home, too, being safe and watching a lot of streaming. Starting today, FYIFAFT will be promo'ing some of our delicious finds on the internet to brighten up your days and nights with good tv shows and movies.

Today's pick is Stateless on Netflix. "A cult escapee, refugee, office worker, and bureaucrat find their lives intertwined in an immigration detention center."
First episode dateMarch 1, 2020
Executive producer(s)Cate BlanchettAndrew UptonTony Ayres; Elise McCredie; Liz Watts; Sally Riley; Andrew Gregory

This 6-part mini-series is Australian produced. Nobody gets bizarre and cruel better than the Aussies, Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, Love Serenade, Rabbit Proof Fence to name just a few off the top of my head. Stateless tells the based on true facts about Sofie, an Australian citizen who winds up at a detention center much like the awful border prisons currently housing immigrants in the U.S. Ameer,  Afgan, Claire, the Nurse Ratched lady who runs the prison-type encampment and maybe the most Stanford Prison Test conflicted character, Cameron.

The thing is filled with good performances. I'm not usually a big fan of Cate Blanchett who co-producedafter she smart-mouthed Matthew McConaughey at an award show, but her psycho performance as a singin' dancin' cult leader is mind boggling. Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair) plays the evil husband cult director.

This show is so compelling and time relevant, I binged the whole thing in one single night. Very well done and five FYIFAFT fuck you's!!
