Best picture of the year: Dolomite IS my name!!!
Somebody sure does remember what the fuck entertainment means and that is Rudy Ray Moore. This movie is all that and then some. Like writing a book where you keep wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next. Dolomite Is My Name is the true story of Rudy Ray Moore, the godfather of rap, literally credited with inventing rap with his witty dirty ditties. He self-made himself as a recording artist, a movie producer, a star and comedian. He was a showman, that's for sure.
The movie does it right. Every film student ought to see this film about making film when film was made out of film. He did it all in the words of Eddie Murphy playing Rudy Ray Moore. When the crew needed food, he was in the kitchen fixing sandwiches. Whatever it took. And you can tell. As a former student myself, I watched a lot of black exploitation movies and studied the likes of Melviin Van Peebles who literally almost lost all his teeth making Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.
The story line follows the same hardships that faced Rudy Ray Moore trying to make a film in the 70's. Everybody did their job, from the crew who knew what special lighting techniques were needed for black people to the set decoration and costumes. Again, got it right. People looked like that back then. I was there and not like some people you hear who SAY they were there.
The players were on the money from Eddie Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Chris Rock to Da'Vine Joy Randolph who made me cry....twice!
Wesley Snipes deserves an oscar. He chewed up every dang scene he was in. Craig Robinson can sing AND act his ass off. Keegan Michael Key who always cracks me up. Stand up in my seat clapping for the so real characters played by Claude Phillips, Arthur Fuller and Ron Cephas Jones. Bravo, ya'll!
I will watch this movie again and again. Best thing I've seen since Tropic Thunder.
